Hispanic Heritage Month begins today and runs through October 15. During this time, it is important to "celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success" (https://www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov/). To celebrate at the Hawks Library, we have curated a display of books from an originally Latin-American genre - magic realism.
In magic realism, stories are presented in a realistic setting, with realistic characters who have realistic problems...that just happen to be paralleled with a little bit of magic. The magic isn't a focus, but rather a background to the setting or a means to solve a problem. It stems from indigenous belief systems that saw beauty and magic in the world around us and its people.
